The Birth of Neon Stars

A recent commission from Pernilla Ohrstedt has produced these beautiful three dimensional argon filled neon stars, made to adorn the Christmas tree at the London Edition Hotel, Berners Street, W1T 3NP.

Each star was made from a single 1500mm length of 8mm clear glass with 25m/A elecrodes and filled with an 75% argon 25% neon gas mixture.

The original commission was to run each star on it's own individual electronic power supply but after some initial teething problems in the workshop with "jelly beaning", these were exchanged for three 10kv/25m/A iron core transformers, each running six stars.

A most enjoyable and satisfying job, many thanks to Pernilla for a truely inspired design.

Get along to The London Edition Hotel over the Christmas holiday and enjoy...
